Lord of the Flies - Costume Design

This production consisted of three acts, which meant Jac needed each characters singular costume to go through 3 deteriorations. The Director, Thomas Pike, wanted it to take place on a jungle gym, where the children’s imagination takes over and it morphs into a real jungle. Mr. Pike also wanted to gender swap roles. One of Jac's goal was to tell the story through color. The color palette then consisted of white and reds. White meaning innocence, and red being danger, energy, and desire. She thrifted, borrowed, or hand made almost everything in this production with a crew of 5 peers.

Budget Spent: $238 on fabric and thrift

Act 1

Most of the kids went to the same school and are mainly in red, compared to  students  Ralph, Piggy, and Percival. Many begin with hats due it’s the beginning of Summer.

Act 2

Jack and his crew: Their clothes have began to deteriorate. Their jackets have become capes, ties are now head pieces, and their shirts, shorts, and skirts have holes.

Act 3

Everyone in Jacks tribe is wearing red. All of their clothes are completely shredded and have their preppy attire has completely disappeared.

Pink would have been to typical for Piggy. Her left sleeve was ripped off live on stage by Jack every night. Her long shorts and a tux like shirt made her dorky to the other kids.

*Piggy never got any red fabric, because she remained herself till her death.

In Act 2, Ralph gives Simon her sweater. So she wraps it in a very Roman way to help illustrate how she is a symbol for Jesus.

She is mostly in blue and white to show her good spirt and innocence. But her father’s blue handkerchief goes from blue to red, to show her innocence fading

During her crucifixion, red blood ran on her clothes every night. Bleached was used every night so the shirt could be reused the following night.

Roger needed to stand out from everyone else on Ralph and Jack’s tribe. Roger is a mysterious character so she was simplistic in texture and pattern. She also turns to black to represent death and pure hatred.

Jack’s tribe had holders for their spears

Materials:  The fabric “ripped” off their clothes, “pig skin” leather, and shower curtain rings

He initially starts off with some red, because he already has a dangerous side. Due to him representing the "Chief" his head wrap is made of lots of ties

Percival - the “little one” - needed to look very youthful. She had a ruffle dress & white tights.

The entire dress was handmade, and her strap was made with snaps to allow it to “break”. She also falls into the desire to be evil and her bright blue bow turns to red.

All of the red plaid skirts were handmade and had hidden buttons in the ruffles to allow them to “rip” and become more like tribal clothing
